Dear Mary Ann,
About 15 years ago I did a poetry reading at a US airforce camp in Norfolk.I was truly captivated by a book in their library 'All my shoes come in twos'. Now, thanks to the wonders of the Internet, I was able to buy a second-hand copy of it! It's wonderful to own my own copy (apart from the wonderful rhymes, the illustrations are delightful). What a good team are you and Norman.
With best wishes,
Colin West

Comment   Dear Mr. West,
How wonderful that someone remembers "Shoes." It was my first published book and the first one that Norm and I collaborated on, and it is still one of my favorites. Norm went on to many other things (architecture, sculpture, ceramics) and stopped illustrating - how I wish I could persuade him to take it up again! I'll show him your message. Thanks so much!

I like your poems. What nationality are you? Mary Ann is such a pretty name! Thank you, I love your winter poems. They remind me of home! I was reading your poems on my couch the other day. It was lovely. What's a good name for my huskey? Since your a author I thought you'd have good names! He's a new member to my dog sledding team! I'm so excited. If you think of a name email me please. Thanks!- Sue

Comment   Dear Sue,
Thanks for your message. I'm American, born and brought up and still living in Connecticut. I was named for my grandmothers. As for names for your huskey, how about: Snowflake, Icicle, Chilly, Snowman, Snowball or Sleighbell? Would any of these work? It must be so much fun to have a dog sledding team! We have two dogs, a brother and a sister, named Pico and Maria. They are Spinones, an Italian breed of hunting dog. Best Wishes!

I am 48 years old and remember by heart several of your gems from Hello And Good-by. I have tried in vain to find this book anywhere, as my girls love the poems I've taught them. They still jump into our room on Saturday mornings exclaiming, 'I'm a tiger striped with fur!' They are SO interestd in hearing past the first two lines of The Llama that had no pajama. Where can I get a
copy for my girls? I just think your book is great, thank you for sharing your gift with us!

Comment   Dear Mr. Simon,
Would you believe I only have one copy of Hello and Good-by myself? It had a very small printing and went out of print very quickly without the publisher notifying me. I have not seen it available on the web, although I have looked several times. However, most of the poems have been reprinted in my collection "The Llama Who Had No Pajama" (Browndeer Press, Harcourt, 1998) with beautiful illustrations by Betty Fraser. And of course "Llama," the title poem is reprinted in full along with 99 other poems. Another book which contains many of the "Hello and Good-by" poems is "Yellow Butter, Purple Jelly" (Viking, 1981), now out of print but sometimes available on the web. And tell your daughters that I wrote "Tiger" for our original little four-year-old tiger, Jimmy, 44 years ago. How wonderful that after all these years you remember it and have passed it on to your children! Thank you.

Gabrielle and Melissa want to tell you how much they enjoy The Llama Who Had No Pajama. Both have brothers. Melissa's fits the description in I Had a Little Brother, but Gabrielle's big brothers don't bother her at all. In fact, they are kind.

Comment   Dear Gabrielle and Melissa,
Thank you for your message sent by Sister Sally Daly. Melissa, I think most little brothers are like the brother in my poem, but they improve as they get older - mine certainly has and I'm sure yours will, too! Gabrielle, I'm so glad your big brothers are kind -I don't have any big brothers so in that poem I was making things up. Now you can write something about nice big brothers from your own experience.
And I'm so glad both you girls like The
Llama Who Had No Pajama!
